Building a gamified spending simulator

A useful research simulator has to feel engaging enough to finish, but structured enough to generate defensible data.

Design tension

If the product feels like a survey, completion drops. If it feels like a game with no constraint, the data becomes less useful.

SpendLens deliberately sits between those extremes. The interface needs to feel approachable while the underlying event model remains research-ready.

Core design principles

  1. Keep the session short enough to complete in one sitting
  2. Make budget consequences legible at every step
  3. Use prompts and triggers sparingly so they remain meaningful
  4. Return an interpretable final report instead of a vague score
